Libya Buries Army Chief After Ankara Jet Crash, International Probe Underway

A joint probe with BEA participation is examining the black boxes with no cause determined.

Overview

  • Thousands gathered in Misrata as Gen. Mohammed al-Haddad was laid to rest, with Libya’s Presidential Council posthumously promoting him to field marshal and naming his deputy, Gen. Salah al-Namroush, acting chief.
  • Turkey held a military ceremony at Murted airbase attended by Defence Minister Yasar Guler and military chief Selcuk Bayraktaroglu before the caskets were flown to Tripoli.
  • The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor is leading a joint Turkish‑Libyan investigation, France’s BEA will assist, and Germany was asked to help examine the flight recorders.
  • Authorities secured the wreckage and both black boxes and are reviewing air traffic control audio, radar and CCTV data, maintenance logs, crew records and fuel samples, with findings still pending.
  • Officials say the Dassault Falcon 50 reported an electrical issue and issued a 7700 emergency code before crashing near Kesikkavak shortly after departing Ankara, while Libya contends with the loss of a key figure in military unification and Turkey’s parliament has extended its troop mandate in Libya.
