Libya Blocks Pro-Palestinian Caravan and Egypt Detains Gaza Solidarity Activists

Authorities in both countries have prevented efforts to symbolically breach the Gaza blockade due to lack of Egyptian approval

Overview

  • A pro-Palestinian caravan of about 1,000 participants from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania was halted at the entrance to Syrte, Libya, on June 13 by forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar.
  • Roughly 40 Global March activists from around 50 countries were detained east of Cairo with their passports confiscated, leading to sit-ins along the Cairo-Ismailia route.
  • Egyptian authorities have declared that all pro-Palestinian actions by foreign delegations require prior authorization, a policy reiterated by the foreign ministry this week.
  • Organizers of both movements intended to symbolically break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since Hamas’s takeover in 2007 and further tightened by the ongoing conflict.
  • The United Nations has said it is aware of the attempts and reminded governments to uphold the right to peaceful assembly.
