LGBTQ Youth Suicide Prevention Group Trevor Project Abandons Elon Musk's Social Media Platform X Over Increasing Hate and Vitriol

Growing Hate Speech and Lack of Moderation on Elon Musk's Platform X Leads to Departure of Trevor project and Other LGBTQ Organizations, Underlining the Negative Impact of the Platform's Policies on Marginalized Communities

  • The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ youth suicide prevention organization, is quitting Elon Musk's social media platform X due to the increasing level of hate and vitriol targeted at the LGBTQ community on the platform.
  • The departure comes in the wake of X’s removal of certain moderation functions that once offered a safer environment for marginalized communities, and its subsequent rise in hate speech and vitriol targeted at the LGBTQ community.
  • Under Musk's management, the platform has seen several policy changes including the removal of provisions protecting trans and nonbinary users like prohibitions against misgendering and deadnaming.
  • Since Musk's takeover, several other organizations advocating for LGBTQ rights including the San Francisco LGBT Center, LGBTQ Youth Scotland, and transgender charity Mermaids, have also left the platform.
  • There has been an alarming drop in X’s score on the GLAAD Social Media Safety Index from 45% to 33% between 2022 and 2023, ranking it as the least safe social media platform among Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.
  • Despite leaving X, The Trevor Project will continue its work on other social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook, all of which are said to have better moderation capabilities essential for maintaining a safer space for the marginalized LGBTQ community.
