LGBT Catholic Groups Hold Jubilee Pilgrimage in Rome, Pass Through St. Peter’s Holy Door

The event proceeded without an explicit Holy See blessing or any doctrinal change.

Overview

  • Organized autonomously by La Tenda di Gionata and allied associations, the pilgrimage was listed on the official Jubilee 2025 calendar as an association event.
  • At the Church of the Gesù, CEI vice president Monsignor Francesco Savino presided at Mass and urged freedom from prejudice and the restoration of dignity for those long marginalized.
  • Organizers said over a thousand participants joined the pilgrimage, while on-the-ground reports described several hundred to around a thousand gathering at Piazza Pia before the procession.
  • Following a Sept. 1 private audience, Father James Martin said Pope Leone XIV conveyed pastoral continuity with Francis in welcoming LGBTQ Catholics.
  • The groups did not attend the Pope’s jubilee audience due to a preplanned program, and many participants looked to Sunday’s Angelus for a possible acknowledgment.
