LG Halts 8K TV Development, Leaving Samsung Largely Alone in a Shrinking Niche

Limited content is pushing TV makers to pause 8K efforts.

Overview

  • LG confirmed it has exited the 8K TV segment and suspended development of both 8K OLED and 8K LCD models, with LG Display saying work is on hold pending market improvements.
  • The company cited scarce native 8K content, weak consumer demand, and technical hurdles such as limited acceptance of compressed 8K signals over HDMI 2.1.
  • With LG stepping back, Samsung is effectively the only major brand introducing a new 8K model in 2026, the QN990H, while Panasonic’s market share remains small.
  • On the supply side, LG Display stopped producing 8K panels and most other panel makers have largely halted 8K output, leaving AU Optronics as the lone manufacturer still building 8K displays.
  • Industry data show global 8K TV sales peaking at 386,800 units in 2022 before dropping to 214,400 in 2023, with 2025 expected at 136,800 as 8K Association membership fell from 33 to 16.
