  • Lexington, Kentucky has launched an interstellar tourism campaign, sending a message to the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system inviting extraterrestrial beings to visit.
  • The message, encoded in binary and beamed into space, includes symbols for elements of life on Earth, molecules for water and ethanol, and an illustration of Lexington's iconic bluegrass hills.
  • The campaign, led by VisitLEX, has already generated over 2 billion impressions and increased web traffic to VisitLex by nearly 50% compared to the same period last year.
  • The message was sent using a special infrared laser through a telescope and the entire transmission lasted about 10 minutes.
  • VisitLEX has also created a time capsule containing components of the event, now on display at the VisitLEX Lexington Visitor Center.
