Lewandowski Cancels Compulsory Hearing on Asylum for Peru’s Ex–First Lady

The ministry said the summons came with too little notice to clear earlier commitments.

Overview

  • Lewandowski informed the Chamber’s Foreign Relations and National Defense Commission he would not attend the session scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4.
  • The meeting had been called to examine the legal status of protection granted to Nadine Heredia and the use of a Brazilian Air Force aircraft for her April transfer to Brazil.
  • In an official letter, the ministry cited short notice for the cancellation and noted he addressed the subject in an April 29 appearance before another House committee.
  • The government’s stated position is that Brazil granted diplomatic asylum on humanitarian and reasons‑of‑state grounds under the 1954 Caracas Convention, with Peru formally notified.
  • Heredia and former president Ollanta Humala were each sentenced in Peru to 15 years for money laundering tied to illicit campaign funds, and the commission had also planned to raise the recent Rio police operation with 121 dead and the public‑security PEC.
