Letters Go Out as Warm Home Discount Expands to £150 for Millions

A government expansion brings the one-off support to more than six million households this winter.

Overview

  • Eligibility now includes many benefit recipients such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related ESA, income-based JSA, Income Support and the Savings Credit part of Pension Credit.
  • Letters confirming entitlement are being sent this week, most customers will receive the credit automatically, and some will be asked to provide extra information via the helpline.
  • Suppliers say the £150 will be applied between November 2025 and 31 March 2026, with most customers expected to receive it before January 2026.
  • The discount is usually added as a credit to the electricity account or issued as a voucher for prepayment meters, and the billpayer’s name must be on the electricity account.
  • Rules vary by nation, with most Scottish customers outside Pension Credit Guarantee Credit needing to apply to their supplier, Northern Ireland not running the scheme, and major firms such as British Gas, EDF, Octopus, E. ON Next, OVO and ScottishPower participating.
