Leopard Kills One, Injures Five in Mandi Before Dying After Villagers Confront It

Officials cite an aged leopard moving in dense fog as a likely factor, with a post-mortem under way.

Overview

  • The animal attacked residents in quick succession across Chandiyal, Bhadyal and Malwana around 7 a.m. in Mandi’s Balh valley.
  • Forest officials identified the deceased as Balbir (also reported as Balveer) Singh, who was visiting relatives in Malwana.
  • The injured—Sahib Singh, Deena Nath, Rekha Devi, Janit and Champa Devi—were admitted to Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Nerchowk, where their condition was described as stable.
  • A wildlife rescue team found the leopard already wounded; it was taken to the Sundernagar veterinary hospital and later died, and its carcass has been sent for examination.
  • Preliminary inspection indicated the leopard was about 11–12 years old with damaged canines, and forest authorities have stepped up surveillance and issued safety advisories while an inquiry continues.
