Leipzig Zoo Confirms Newborn Koala Is Female, Opens Public Naming Call

Visitors can expect the joey to appear more often as it starts venturing from the pouch.

Overview

  • Name suggestions are being accepted online through January 19 at www.zoo-leipzig.de/namensaufruf, with Australian-themed ideas encouraged.
  • The young koala is developing well, already leaving the pouch and nibbling eucalyptus, according to the zoo.
  • The parents are mother Erlinga, age 4, and father Yuma, age 5.
  • Keeper Juliane Ladensack reported an early glimpse of the joey, and senior curator Ariel Jacken earlier predicted it would soon be regularly visible to visitors.
  • The update coincides with the return of the Magisches Tropenleuchten event on January 8, lighting up Gondwanaland.
