Leipzig Zoo Closes Gondwanaland, Pongoland and Flamingo Lagoon in Suspected Avian Flu Case

Officials are overseeing bird testing after the zoo reported a suspected H5N1 case.

Overview

  • The closures took effect Saturday, suspending access to Gondwanaland, Pongoland and the Flamingo lagoon.
  • The zoo said the suspected avian influenza case has not been confirmed and that it remains in close contact with the responsible authorities.
  • Temporary admission prices were reduced to €12 for adults, €9 for children and €26 for families while restrictions are in place.
  • Many attractions remain open, including the koala offspring, the aquarium and terrarium, and the Kiwara savanna.
  • BILD reported that all birds are being examined as part of the response, set against a national H5N1 wave that prompted about 400,000 poultry culls by late October, according to the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut.
