Overview
- In early October 2026 the city’s cultural office said only preliminary test drillings have been carried out at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz as the team completes site investigations.
- The design by Kollektiv Zila, led by Alexej Kolyschkow, won the city competition two years ago and continues to be developed in what the designers call a "künstlerischen Prozess."
- Planned elements are oversized, white lacquered metal banners roughly 4.5 meters at the top and 3 meters at the bottom as a deliberate reference to the four white bed sheets used in 1989 protests.
- Officials say the project is still in static and structural planning with visible forms expected in 2028, montage scheduled to begin in April 2029, and an inauguration set for October 9, 2029.
- The memorial will be integrated into a park at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and is intended to serve as a permanent focal point for Leipzig’s remembrance of the 1989 Monday demonstrations and the annual Lichtfest.
