Leidens Ontzet Takes Over Leiden With Crowds, Closures and Civic Rituals

City officials warn the center is hard to reach and roll out deposit cups and service shutdowns to manage more than 200,000 visitors.

Overview

  • Organizers expect roughly 200,000 attendees across 2–3 October, with about 70,000 on Thursday evening and well over 100,000 today.
  • The Friday program is in full swing with the reveille, haring and white bread at De Waag, kermis and the afternoon parade themed “Als een Komeet,” which Omroep West is broadcasting live with Centraal+.
  • Thursday’s Grote Hutspotmaaltijd served 7,058 portions using 1,900 kg of potatoes, 803 kg of carrots and other ingredients, and Leiden DJ Armin van Buuren volunteered with the haring and white bread committee.
  • Leiden urges visitors not to drive into the center as key streets and squares are closed, parking and bike spaces are limited, and buses are rerouted with some stops suspended; Leiden Centraal is the advised rail gateway.
  • Public services are curtailed today, with LUMC outpatient clinics and central blood collection closed and unreachable by phone, municipal offices shut, most schools closed, and drinks sold in refundable cups (€0.50 start fee plus €1 deposit) to cut litter.
