Leh Under Curfew After Deadly Clashes as Centre Speeds Ladakh Talks

The government is pairing legal action with a negotiation push after the worst unrest in Ladakh in decades.

Overview

  • Four people were killed and more than 80 injured as protests for statehood and Sixth Schedule protections turned violent with arson, stone-pelting, and police teargas and firing, including the burning of the BJP’s Leh office.
  • Authorities enforced a district-wide curfew and prohibitory orders, deployed heavy police and paramilitary reinforcements, and detained about 50 people in raids across Leh.
  • The Union home ministry accused Sonam Wangchuk of incitement and police booked a Congress councillor over an alleged provocative speech, while Wangchuk ended his 15-day fast and appealed to youths to halt the violence.
  • The Centre cancelled the FCRA licence of SECMOL, founded by Wangchuk, and the CBI began an inquiry into alleged FCRA violations at his Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh.
  • Seeking a way forward, the Centre sent a special envoy to Leh and received a six-member delegation from Leh and Kargil in Delhi, with formal talks between Ladakh groups and the government scheduled for October 6.
