The shutdown follows violent demonstrations over calls for Ladakh statehood alongside Sixth Schedule safeguards.

Overview

  • District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk, IAS, issued the order directing an immediate two-day halt to in-person education.
  • The directive covers all government and private schools, colleges, anganwadi centres, coaching centres and other educational institutions across Leh district.
  • Chief Education Officer, college principals and institutional heads were told to ensure strict compliance with the closure.
  • The Senior Superintendent of Police was assigned enforcement duties, with the Director of School Education and ICDS monitoring compliance and DIPR tasked with wide publicity.
  • The precaution follows protests that turned violent on September 24, leaving four dead, over 80 injured and government buildings and vehicles torched.
