Before his Apollo 8 mission, Borman was the commander of the 1965 Gemini 7 mission, which was notable for its long-duration flight, lasting nearly 14 days—a record at the time.
The Apollo 8 mission marked the first time humans orbited another celestial body, advancing NASA’s grasp of deep space navigation and aiding in our understanding of lunar geography.
After leaving NASA in 1970, Borman turned his attention to aviation and became Eastern Air Lines’ CEO. He also engaged in civic and charitable work.
