Nick Saban, the legendary Alabama football coach, has announced his retirement after a career that saw him win seven national championships, more than any other major college football coach.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, an Alabama graduate, is being mentioned as a potential successor to Saban, despite a stipulation in his contract that would make his buyout 1.5 times larger if he left for Alabama.
Other coaches included in early speculation include Oregon’s Dan Lanning and Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss.
Saban's retirement ends a career that has helped launch or relaunch the head coaching careers of Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Texas’ Steve Sarkisian and Mississippi’s Lane Kiffin.
Despite retiring, Saban plans to take on a new role as an advisor for the Alabama program.
