Leeds–York Rail Line Closed for Nine Days for Bridge Replacement

The short closure will let engineers install a higher Common Lane bridge so overhead electrification equipment can be fitted.

Overview

  • Train services between Leeds and York will be suspended from Saturday to Sunday, running from October 24 to November 1, to complete the Common Lane bridge replacement.
  • Engineers have already removed the old 1900–1901 structure during two preparatory weekends and moved the replacement forward from 2027 to 2026 because the existing bridge is too low for overhead line equipment.
  • Direct rail replacement buses will run between the two cities with additional stopping buses serving intermediate stations and a longer Northern route via Harrogate continuing to operate as an alternative.
  • Separate East Coast Main Line improvement works will also replace services with buses on October 24–25 and October 31–November 1, affecting journeys between Darlington, York and Doncaster.
  • TRU and Northern advise passengers to check journeys, allow extra time, and expect staff on site to help while the work advances plans to electrify and improve reliability on the Transpennine route.
