Leeds Crown Court Jails Pair for Modern Slavery With Sentences of Nine and Eight Years

The convictions cap a UKRomania joint investigation that tracked the pair to Amsterdam before extradition.

Overview

  • Costel Tambac, 50, and Mariana Iova, 35, were convicted by a jury in July and sentenced today for modern slavery and controlling prostitution offences at Leeds Crown Court.
  • Judge Stubbs imposed a slavery and trafficking protection order and said they will be on licence after release if not deported.
  • Victims were deceived with promises of factory work, had phones and identity documents taken, and were controlled through threats and violence.
  • The women were forced to service six to eight clients a day, their earnings were seized leaving them with as little as £10 daily, and Iova spent about £30,000 on online adverts.
  • The offending spanned addresses in Leeds’ Harehills and Holbeck and in Dewsbury, Oldham, Nottingham and Liverpool, following an investigation that began in 2016 and led to Amsterdam arrests and extradition earlier this year.
