Lee Fire Containment Climbs to 60% as Elk Fire Hits Full Containment
Storm-driven rain bolstered containment lines before a forecasted return to hot, dry conditions
Overview
- The Lee fire has consumed roughly 137,465 acres between Meeker and Rifle and is now 60% contained, making it Colorado’s fifth-largest wildfire and closing in on the Hayman burn record.
- The Elk fire east of Meeker is fully contained at 14,518 acres, though crews remain vigilant for spot fires driven by shifting winds.
- Weekend thunderstorms delivered up to half an inch of rain on the Lee fire’s southern flank, which strengthened containment lines, reopened Colorado Highway 13 and allowed several evacuation orders to be downgraded.
- Over 1,200 firefighters, supported by the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team Three and local agencies, are conducting suppression, mop-up and structure protection operations.
- Other Western Slope blazes remain active, including the 8,369-acre Stoner Mesa fire with zero containment and the roughly 2,004-acre Crosho fire at 8% containment under mandatory evacuation notices.
