Lecornu Pledges Local-Officials Status Law Before 2026 Municipals, Previews Decentralization Bill

The prime minister sets a 2026 budget path to revalue mayors’ allowances.

Overview

  • In a letter sent on September 17 to all mayors, Sébastien Lecornu vows passage of the status law ahead of the March 2026 municipal elections.
  • The bill cleared a first reading in the National Assembly on July 10 and now returns to the Senate for further examination.
  • Measures in the text include extra retirement quarters for local officials and higher allowances for mayors and deputies in communes under 20,000 inhabitants.
  • The version backed by deputies would raise allowances by about 4% to 10% in smaller communes, with an estimated cost of roughly €130 million.
  • Lecornu also promises to present a “grand act of decentralization” to define competencies between the central state, prefects and local authorities.
