Leaked Roadmap Shows Microsoft Planning Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility for PC

The plan would let developers opt their 360 catalogs onto Windows PCs and Project Helix while Microsoft runs emulation and support, and it pairs with a disc-to-digital scheme that ties digital licenses to physical discs.

Overview

  • A leaked internal roadmap reported Monday shows Microsoft briefing developers on a program to make Xbox 360 games playable on Windows PCs, Project Helix hardware, and compatible handhelds.
  • The document describes a “gradual” rollout for Xbox 360 compatibility across 2027 and 2028 and sets an October 2026 date for a wider release of original Xbox titles to PC.
  • A disc-to-digital feature in the leak would grant a transferable digital license when an Xbox One or Series disc is inserted into a console, but reporting says that feature does not apply to Xbox 360 discs and its public beta was delayed.
  • Under the plan developers would opt in to re-release 360 SKUs and keep control of price and Game Pass inclusion, while Microsoft would handle engineering, certification, compatibility testing, store listings, updates, and player support.
  • The push to digitize older games follows Xbox’s July restructuring that included layoffs and studio sales and raises fresh questions about ownership, resale and the future of physical discs for players and retailers.
