Lead Balloon Productions Buys Kalamazoo State Theatre, Eyes 2027 Reopening

The change follows a yearlong pause with a plan to preserve the venue’s character through targeted upgrades.

Overview

  • Dan and Holly Carmichael’s Lead Balloon Productions acquired the 1927 landmark at 404 S. Burdick St., announcing the deal Tuesday after closing on Monday.
  • The owners plan to restore the John Eberson–designed interior, upgrade safety, accessibility and building flow, modernize technical systems, and work with Wilson Butler Architects on the project.
  • A reopening is targeted for 2027 to align with the theater’s centennial, with plans to resume a diverse slate of performances and events.
  • The purchase includes the adjacent Harvey’s on the Mall property, and The Grazing Table said it will relocate following the sale; the price was not disclosed.
  • Hinman Co., which saved the venue from demolition in 1986 and ran it for decades, endorsed the transition to the Carmichaels.
