LDS Quorum President Jeffrey R. Holland Dies at 85

The second-longest tenured apostle’s passing moves Henry B. Eyring up in line to the presidency.

Overview

  • He died at approximately 3:15 a.m. MST on Dec. 27 from complications associated with kidney disease after a Christmas-week hospitalization, the church said.
  • Holland was serving as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and, by seniority, was next in line to lead the church.
  • Under the church’s succession system, Henry B. Eyring now becomes next in the line of succession.
  • His death creates a vacancy in the Quorum that President Dallin H. Oaks is expected to fill in the coming months by calling a new apostle.
  • A former BYU president and longtime Church Educational System leader, he is being remembered with tributes from religious and political figures, and funeral arrangements remain pending.
