LDS Church Adds AI Guidance to General Handbook, Bars Use for Inspired Talks and Blessings

The policy permits limited supportive uses, preserves spiritual preparation, restricts sensitive data entry.

Overview

  • Published Dec. 16, the new handbook section (38.8.47) was announced on ChurchofJesusChrist.org as part of the latest update.
  • The guidance affirms that AI cannot replace divine inspiration or relationships with God and others in Church teaching and ministry.
  • Four principles authorize positive, uplifting use, allow help with research, editing and translation, forbid drafting divinely inspired talks, lessons, prayers or blessings, and prohibit entering sensitive member data into non‑Church AI tools.
  • Leaders are instructed not to rely on AI for medical, financial, legal or other sensitive advice, directing members to competent professionals when needed.
  • The Church notes it added an AI-powered handbook search assistant in March, and the December release also updates youth activity ages, baptism preparation, Primary participation in coordination meetings, patriarchal blessing guidance, missionary coordination purpose and welfare instructions.
