LDS Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland Dies at 85 as Church Sets Dec. 31 Tabernacle Funeral

The church scheduled a public, globally streamed service at the Salt Lake Tabernacle after confirming he died from kidney disease complications.

  • Jeffrey R. Holland, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, died in Salt Lake City on Dec. 27 at about 3:15 a.m. from complications associated with kidney disease while surrounded by family.
  • Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, from 11 a.m. to noon MST in the Tabernacle on Temple Square, open to the public ages 8 and up with doors opening at 9:30 a.m.
  • President Dallin H. Oaks will preside and Elder Quentin L. Cook will conduct, with remarks from family and music by the Tabernacle Choir; the service will stream live in 38 languages and on YouTube in 10.
  • Holland will be buried in St. George, Utah, next to his late wife, Patricia, who died in 2023, the church announced.
  • His passing creates a vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve; Henry B. Eyring is now next in line for the presidency, and President Oaks is expected to name a new apostle in the months ahead.
