LDP's Takaichi Apologizes for Komeito Split, Sets Talks With Opposition Leaders

The breakdown over corporate and group donation curbs is now driving the LDP to seek partners before the prime minister vote.

Overview

  • Sanae Takaichi told party lawmakers she was responsible for Komeito’s exit and is arranging individual meetings on Oct. 15 with the leaders of the Constitutional Democrats, Japan Innovation Party, and Democratic Party for the People.
  • She emphasized the LDP remains the largest force in both chambers and is aiming to secure support for the prime minister designation in an extraordinary Diet session expected to open on Oct. 21.
  • LDP Secretary-General Shunichi Suzuki rejected the Komeito–DPFP proposal to limit corporate and group donations to party headquarters and prefectural bodies, saying the plan cannot be accepted.
  • A Tokyo prosecutorial review board deemed the non-prosecution of LDP Upper House member Hiroyuki Kada "inappropriate," prompting a reinvestigation, while a separate panel found non-prosecution of Lower House member Kazuo Yana "appropriate."
  • Suzuki said Komeito indicated the LDP may field a candidate in Hokkaido’s 4th district, signaling that previously discussed election cooperation there has been effectively voided.
