Overview

  • The ruling LDP-Komeito bloc is projected to win fewer than 50 of the 125 seats and will lose its majority in the House of Councillors.
  • Sanseitō expanded its presence by winning single-member district seats in Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Aichi, Osaka and Fukuoka and securing six proportional representation seats.
  • Komeito is set to reduce its tally from 14 seats while the Constitutional Democratic Party holds its 22 seats and the Japan Innovation Party maintains its existing representation.
  • Smaller parties Reiwa Shinsengumi and the Japan Conservatives Party each captured multiple proportional representation seats in a fragmented electorate.
  • Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has affirmed he will remain LDP leader despite the setback, setting the stage for alliance-building in the upper chamber.
