Layton Hotel Sting Seizes 56 Pounds of Meth, Two Men Arrested

- Arnulfo Ruiz Mendez, 32, and Gabriel Edwin Mendez Franco, 22, were booked into the Davis County Jail on investigation of attempting to distribute a controlled substance, a second-degree felony.
- Agents from the Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force and the FBI staged at the Hilton Garden Inn in Layton on Oct. 11 after being briefed on the planned delivery.
- Officers took both suspects into custody outside the hotel and recovered about 56 pounds of methamphetamine from a large bag in a Chevrolet Silverado with an Arizona plate.
- Ruiz Mendez told police he obtained the drugs in Phoenix and expected $4,000 for the delivery, while Mendez Franco said he would be paid $1,000 for transporting them.
- Neither suspect is a U.S. citizen, and both are being held on immigration and federal complaints as the investigation continues.
