LAX Removes Iconic Entrance Pylons for Roadway Overhaul

The teardown clears space for elevated routes that separate airport and neighborhood traffic ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

Overview

  • Crews have dismantled the ring of 15 illuminated pylons at the LAX entrance, structures that have greeted travelers since 2000.
  • The pylons, ranging from roughly 25 to 100 feet tall, were part of a 26-piece installation stretching 1.5 miles along Century Boulevard.
  • Los Angeles World Airports says the removals enable the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program’s Roadway Improvements Project reconfiguring 4.4 miles of roads.
  • The plan includes elevated ingress targeted before the 2028 Olympic Games and full egress completion by 2030 to ease congestion and improve safety and access.
  • LAWA’s Michael Christensen called the pylons a symbol that welcomed more than 1.2 billion visitors and said their redesign will be considered as work proceeds.
