LAX Begins Shutting Terminal 5 for Demolition as Airlines Relocate

The teardown is part of a $30 billion modernization targeting a rebuilt 15-gate concourse before the 2028 Olympics.

Overview

  • JetBlue moved to Terminal 1 on Oct. 21, Spirit shifts check-in to Terminal 2 with flights operating from MSC South on Oct. 22, and American consolidates at Terminal 4 on Oct. 28.
  • Midfield Satellite Concourse South opened Oct. 21, adding more than 150,000 square feet and eight gates to help absorb Terminal 5 traffic.
  • Terminal 5’s final operating day is Oct. 28, with demolition to follow and a full rebuild replacing core systems, ticketing, security, baggage and inter-terminal connections.
  • The project cost is reported around $1.4–$1.7 billion, and the rebuilt facility will retain 15 gates rather than expand its gate count.
  • LAWA documents indicate American may receive preferential use of 10 of the 15 gates when the new concourse opens, with full reopening planned before the 2028 Games and a possible partial debut as early as mid-2027.
