Overview
- Defense filed a motion on June 3 seeking to allow Mangione to appear at his June 26 state court hearing unshackled and in civilian clothing without a bulletproof vest
- Lead attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo described Mangione as a “model prisoner” who has cooperated fully since his December 2024 arrest and presented no security incidents
- Prosecutors have charged the 27-year-old with first-degree murder as an act of terrorism in state court and with federal counts that carry the possibility of the death penalty in the December assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
- In earlier pretrial filings, Mangione’s defense also moved to dismiss state charges on double jeopardy grounds and to suppress key evidence including a handgun and notebook seized at his arrest
- Judge Gregory Carro is expected to rule on the unshackling and vest motion before Mangione’s next appearance on June 26, 2025, with a federal hearing set for December
