Lawyer Detained After Shoe-Throwing Attempt at CJI Gavai in Supreme Court

Investigators are probing a security breach linked to anger over the Chief Justice’s Khajuraho case remarks.

Overview

  • The man was identified by police as advocate Rakesh Kishore, 71, a Supreme Court Bar Association member from Mayur Vihar.
  • He approached the dais in Court No. 1 around 11:35 am and was quickly restrained and handed to the Supreme Court security unit.
  • CJI B. R. Gavai was unharmed and told the courtroom, “Don’t get distracted by all this… These things do not affect me,” as proceedings continued.
  • As he was escorted out, the man was heard saying, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge,” and initial inquiries cite anger over the CJI’s earlier Khajuraho idol remarks.
  • The Supreme Court security unit and Delhi Police have opened inquiries, with coordination underway to determine legal action; some accounts differ on whether a shoe or a roll of paper was thrown.
