LawSoc Members Demand Full Audit as Council Reconsiders Release

Transparency over an internal probe is now central to restoring trust in the society and letting members assess accountability.

Overview

  • An anonymous email on Sept. 13, 2025 prompted an audit into Law Society practices that the audit committee reported to the council on June 5 and the council sent to the Ministry of Law on July 1.
  • Law Minister Edwin Tong said on Aug. 5 that the audit found significant failings in leadership, workplace culture and governance from 2022 to 2025 but did not find deliberate financial impropriety or an intentional cover-up.
  • More than 100 members led by Senior Counsel Jimmy Yim petitioned for the full audit and underlying investigation materials to be released and requested access so members can form their own views on remedies and discipline.
  • A closed-door meeting of over 200 members on Aug. 13 reviewed only a summary that had to be returned, saw heated calls for the annexes and investigation reports that were withheld, and prompted the council to say it will reconsider releasing the full materials.
  • MinLaw has urged disclosure with appropriate redactions and members retain formal levers such as requisitioning an extraordinary general meeting or seeking disciplinary and police action, while the society says it has begun implementing some audit recommendations including a travel protocol review.
