Lawmakers Request SEC Probe into Musk's Neuralink Over Animal Deaths

Allegations of Misleading Statements About Monkey Deaths During Trials Could Impact Safety and Marketability of Neuralink's Brain-Computer Interface

  • Four Democratic members of Congress have asked the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to investigate Elon Musk's Neuralink for securities fraud, alleging misleading statements about the death of monkeys during animal trials.
  • The lawmakers claim that Musk knowingly made a false statement when he posted that no monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant, while at least 12 young macaque monkeys were euthanized after developing health problems directly related to Neuralink’s implants.
  • The effort was led by Rep. Earl Blumenauer and supported by Reps. Jim McGovern, Barbara Lee, and Tony Cardenas, who all signed a letter addressed to SEC Chairman Gary Gensler.
  • The lawmakers argue that the animal deaths directly relate to the safety and marketability of Neuralink's brain-computer interface, and therefore, Musk's statement may have violated SEC rules.
  • This scrutiny comes as Neuralink prepares to test the brain implant in humans for the first time, a critical milestone for the startup's ambitions to help patients overcome paralysis and a host of neurological conditions.
