Lawmakers Call for Ban of Pro-Palestinian Student Group in New York
The group, Students for Justice in Palestine, is accused of endorsing violence and contributing to a rise in antisemitism on college campuses.
- A bipartisan group of lawmakers has sent a letter to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, calling for the ban of the pro-Palestinian student group 'Students for Justice in Palestine' (SJP) from New York college campuses, alleging the group has endorsed violence and increased instances of antisemitism.
- The lawmakers claim that SJP's umbrella organization, the National Students for Justice in Palestine (National SJP), has supported Hamas as a resistance movement and regards 'Palestinian students in exile' as part of the movement.
- SJP has been accused of releasing statements across New York State endorsing the use of violence and attacks on civilians, with members allegedly chanting incendiary slogans at events.
- SJP has already been suspended at Columbia University after it was discovered the group celebrated the terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7 that led to over 1,200 deaths and hundreds taken hostage.
- The lawmakers have called for an investigation into any student groups that 'explicitly endorse registered foreign terrorist organizations' and for them to be banned from New York universities.
