LaVon Bracy Davis Defeats Brother in Florida Senate Primary

She will now face Republican Willie Montague in the Sept. 2 general election in a district that heavily favors Democrats.

  • LaVon Bracy Davis secured the Democratic nomination for State Senate District 15 by defeating her brother, former Sen. Randolph Bracy, in Tuesday’s special primary.
  • The vacancy followed the February death of longtime Sen. Geraldine Thompson and covers western Orange County areas such as Orlando, Ocoee, Apopka and Winter Garden.
  • Davis earned key endorsements from their mother, civil rights activist LaVon Wright Bracy, and the Thompson family while pledging to carry on Thompson’s work on voting rights and teacher pay.
  • In the four-way contest, Davis led with roughly 43% of the vote ahead of attorney Coretta Anthony-Smith and ex-Rep. Alan Grayson, with Randolph Bracy finishing last at just over 12%.
  • she dedicated her victory to her late father, Rev. Randolph Bracy Jr., saying his example guided her throughout the race.
