Álava Births Rebound as Gipuzkoa Hits 50-Year Low in Early 2025

Fresh Eustat figures for the first quarter show a mild regional rise with sharp provincial divergence.

Overview

  • Álava recorded 534 births in Q1 2025, up 6% year over year, marking its best start to a year since 2022.
  • Euskadi logged 3,261 births, a gain of 77 from a year earlier (about 2.4%), with increases in Álava and Bizkaia but a decline in Gipuzkoa.
  • Gipuzkoa registered 1,101 births, down 2.2% from Q1 2024, the lowest quarterly total there in roughly half a century; Bizkaia counted 1,626.
  • Mothers aged 30–34 accounted for 34.1% of births and those 35–39 for 33.9%, with a small uptick among ages 25–29 (13.6%) and 11.6% at 40 or older.
  • Foreign mothers represented 26.6% of births in Q1, below last year's 29.5%, with shares of 32.2% in Álava, 26.1% in Bizkaia and 24.5% in Gipuzkoa; 51.3% of babies were firstborn and 51.3% were born outside marriage.
