Overview

  • Among respondents with Sorbian origin, 83% say the region is close to their heart compared with 62% of others, 58% think about the Lausitz’s future versus 36%, and 24% report participation in shaping it versus 12%.
  • Sorbian-affiliated respondents view recent developments more positively, with over one third saying the situation improved in the past five years compared with about one quarter of others.
  • The 2025 survey estimates about 14% of residents have Sorbian roots, with higher shares in Spree-Neiße (20%), Oberspreewald-Lausitz (17%) and Bautzen (17%).
  • Across all respondents, Sorbian culture and language are widely recognized as core to regional identity (83% and 72% respectively), and nearly half see “Witaj” as a regional greeting, though only 1% report speaking Sorbian.
  • Results were presented in Bautzen by co-initiator Dr. Jörg Heidig, who noted consistent 10–15 point differences, based on an online poll of 1,028 residents conducted in March and April by MAS.
