The Los Angeles City Council has voted to slash the Police Department budget by $150 million, reducing the number of officers to a level not seen for more than a decade. The council approved the change Wednesday, July 1, 2020, dropping the number of officers to a little more than 9,700 by next summer. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File)

Overview

  • The district’s 211-officer police force will patrol and cordon off more than 100 graduation sites to block ICE agents from entering without judicial warrants.
  • Principals have been instructed to expedite venue entry, maintain presence at bus stops and surrounding streets, and offer virtual viewing for families unable to attend in person.
  • The initiative reverses LAUSD’s 2021 decision to cut school police funding by 35% and reallocate resources into student support programs.
  • Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the same security protocols will extend into summer school starting June 17, with additional locations and transportation support.
  • Carvalho has consulted with Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass to coordinate district protections with state and local authorities.
