Latin American Courts Hand Down Prison Terms in Two Long-Running Child Sex Abuse Cases

The rulings cap separate prosecutions, one via a plea in Argentina, the other after an oral trial in Mexico.

Overview

  • In Huacalera, Jujuy, a man was sentenced to six years in prison in a juicio abreviado for one count of sexual abuse and one count of sexual abuse with carnal access in real concurrence.
  • Judges Alejandro Máximo Gloss, Pablo Pullen Llermanos and María Alejandra Tolaba set conduct rules that bar electronic or social media contact with the victim and her mother for the length of the sentence.
  • The Argentine tribunal also ordered payment of costs and the convict’s genetic profile to be obtained for the national sexual-offense registry once the sentence is final.
  • In San Quintín, Baja California, Leonardo Eligio Hafen López received 16 years and 300 days for aggravated sexual abuse of a girl under 14 due to kinship, with restitution mandated.
  • Prosecutors reported the Baja California abuse began in 2014 when the victim was eight and continued until December 2019, while the Jujuy case described abuse between 2017 and 2024 within the household.
