Late September Is the Best Time to Plant Garlic

Planting in late September through October lets cloves root through winter for bigger bulbs next summer.

Overview

  • Set individual cloves 4–5 cm deep with the point up, spacing 10–15 cm in the row and 25–30 cm between rows.
  • Choose winter‑hardy seed garlic from specialist suppliers rather than supermarket bulbs that may not match local conditions.
  • Pick a sunny, warm, well‑drained, nutrient‑rich site or use a container at least 10 cm deep with reliable drainage to prevent rot.
  • Water sparingly, avoid heavy or waterlogged soil, and keep foliage dry; garlic can help deter pests and should not be planted near onions or leeks.
  • Harvest when leaves yellow, then dry the bulbs and store them cool, dark and airy for several months; bulbils are a tougher alternative that need up to two years to reach full size.
