Late-Season System To Cool Phoenix, Bring Highest Storm Chances Friday

A Pacific low will funnel monsoon moisture into Arizona, pushing Flood Watches in the southeast.

Overview

  • After a hot Thursday near 106 degrees, Valley highs are expected to fall more than 10 degrees to the low to mid-90s Friday and stay below normal into the weekend.
  • Rain and thunderstorm chances in Phoenix increase Thursday night and peak Friday at roughly 50% to 60%, with scattered activity lingering Saturday and slight chances Sunday.
  • The National Weather Service warns some storms could turn severe, bringing damaging wind gusts, large hail, heavy rainfall and flash flooding across south-central Arizona.
  • A Flood Watch is in place through Saturday evening for parts of southeastern Arizona, with an additional watch Friday for areas east and southeast of Phoenix including Miami, Apache Junction, Casa Grande and Fountain Hills.
  • Many Valley locations may receive a tenth to a quarter inch of rain, with pockets over an inch possible in some areas and higher terrain, as Phoenix makes a late push in a below-normal monsoon season at Sky Harbor.
