Rescue operations and precautionary closures expanded after the Yamuna overtopped danger levels in Delhi and fresh landslides and flooding hit hill states.

Overview

  • Delhi-NCR remained on high alert with the Yamuna reaching about 206.78 meters; authorities shut the old iron bridge and evacuated low-lying Yamuna-par areas.
  • Punjab reported severe inundation with roughly 1,400 villages affected, about 30 deaths and more than 3.54 lakh people impacted as relief agencies worked at scale.
  • Himachal Pradesh confirmed six deaths in the Sundernagar landslide and continued search-and-rescue, while Uttarakhand and J&K kept schools closed in several districts under heavy-rain alerts.
  • In Jammu & Kashmir, the Sheshnag, Lidder, Vishaw and Aru nalas crossed danger or flood levels, and August rainfall was the sixth highest since 1901 at 319.3 mm.
  • In parallel governance developments, the Delhi High Court denied bail to several 2020 riot accused including Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid citing extensive police evidence, and the Calcutta High Court ordered the 26-storey Elita Garden Vista tower in New Town demolished within two months with a probe into approvals.
