Last Orleans Jail Escapee Derrick Groves Captured After Atlanta Standoff

The arrest ends a months-long manhunt triggered by a May jailbreak that exposed serious security lapses at New Orleans' lockup.

Overview

  • Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair said Groves was taken into custody at a Southwest Atlanta residence after a standoff involving Atlanta Police and U.S. Marshals.
  • The capture brings all 10 inmates who escaped the Orleans Justice Center on May 16 back into custody.
  • The New Orleans district attorney’s office has said Groves was convicted for a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting, including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
  • Nine previously recaptured escapees were transferred to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, according to local reports.
  • Investigations into outside assistance continue, with Groves’ girlfriend Darriana Burton jailed on a conspiracy-to-commit-simple-escape charge and accused of contacting him via a jail iPad program.
