Last Escaped Serval From Pennsylvania Wildlife Center Is Killed by Car

The Alburtis refuge said weeks of searches ended after the third serval was fatally struck, following a Nov. 5 windstorm that breached its enclosure.

Overview

  • Two of the three African servals that got out on Nov. 5 were recovered safely in November.
  • The center did not disclose where the vehicle strike occurred after the cat’s last reported sighting near Berks County Memorial Gardens.
  • Search efforts spanned several communities with traps and cameras after the cat’s tracking collar fell off, and residents were urged not to chase sightings.
  • Staff thanked the public for more than 100 sighting reports and for the dozens of volunteers who joined organized searches.
  • The servals were older animals retained from earlier cat-rescue work and were not considered dangerous, and owning servals in Pennsylvania requires a special permit.
