Las Vegas Police Release Bodycam Showing Suspect Admit Firing in Road-Rage Killing of 11-Year-Old

Tyler Matthew Johns, 22, faces an open murder charge with a court hearing set for December 4.

Overview

  • The LVMPD posted roughly 45 minutes of body-camera video that captures the suspect surrendering and saying, "I shot at him" while claiming he did not know a child was in the back seat.
  • Footage also shows the boy’s stepfather, Valente Ayala, telling officers "My kid is dead" moments after the shooting on the 215 Southern Beltway near Gibson Road.
  • Police say the Nov. 14 confrontation began around 7:30 a.m. as the drivers were jockeying for position and arguing through open windows before a single round was fired into Ayala’s SUV.
  • After the shot, Ayala rammed the suspect’s car to stop it; a passing Las Vegas officer intervened, arrested Tyler Matthew Johns at the scene, and recovered a firearm.
  • The Clark County Coroner said 11-year-old Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria died from a gunshot wound to the head, and court records list Johns on an open murder count and weapons charges with the next hearing set for December 4.
