Las Vegas Duo Sentenced to 20 and 18 Years to Life for Video-Recorded Killing of Retired Police Chief

The judge imposed the maximum terms allowed under Nevada’s juvenile-sentencing rules after the pair entered October guilty pleas.

Overview

  • Clark County District Court sentenced Jesus Ayala, 20, to 20 years to life plus an additional 2 to 10 years for battery, and Jzamir Keys, 18, to 18 years to life for second-degree murder with a deadly weapon.
  • Retired California police chief Andreas “Andy” Probst, 64, was struck from behind on Aug. 14, 2023, by a stolen Hyundai as a passenger-shot video captured the impact and laughter inside the car.
  • A school resource officer provided the collision video to investigators before it circulated widely on social media, which helped identify the suspects and led to arrests.
  • Prosecutors said the teens also hit a 72-year-old bicyclist who survived and crashed into another driver that morning, and Judge Jacqueline Bluth called the conduct “callous and heinous.”
  • Because the offenders were juveniles at the time, Ayala will be eligible for parole after 20 years and Keys after 18, and Probst’s family has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit that also names Hyundai over alleged theft vulnerabilities.
