Kirian Rodríguez, captain of La Liga club Las Palmas, has announced a relapse of Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer affecting the lymphatic system.
The midfielder will step away from football for six months to undergo chemotherapy treatment for the second time in his career.
Rodríguez was first diagnosed with the disease in August 2022, missing much of the 2022-23 season before returning to play in April 2023.
This season, Rodríguez has been a key player for Las Palmas, starting in 21 of their 22 La Liga matches and making 213 career appearances for the club.
The club and Spanish football organizations have expressed strong support for Rodríguez, with messages of encouragement from La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
