• UC San Diego and 23andMe analyzed genotype and survey data from 131,895 participants, with frequency data from 73,374, and published the results October 13, 2025 in Molecular Psychiatry.
• Lifetime cannabis use was associated with loci near CADM2 and GRM3, and CADM2 was also linked to frequency of use.
• A secondary analysis identified 40 additional genes tied to lifetime use and four tied to frequency, including 29 not previously linked to cannabis-related traits.
• Genetic liability to cannabis use correlated with 100+ psychiatric, cognitive and physical-health traits, with associations evaluated using NIH All of Us and Vanderbilt biobank datasets.
• The study targets intermediate behaviors that precede cannabis use disorder and the authors emphasize discovery-stage findings with no FDA-approved drug treatments currently available.
